Responsibilities

The incumbent serves as a Registered Nurse for the Imaging Service within the Gulf Coast VA Healthcare System; this system is comprised of multiple clinics across three states. The position reports directly to the Chief of Imaging or his/her designee.

Responsibilities are complex in scope, involving utilization review of all requested MRI examinations and coordination of Radiology driven practices. The MRI (Utilization Review) Nurse is customer-service oriented, meeting a variety of Radiologic Nursing needs for the Veterans served. These services contribute significantly to the level of health care provided by the Imaging Service. Decisions are made exercising wide latitude and independent judgment. Along with a customer service orientation, the MRI Nurse focuses strongly on coordinating patient care based on the nursing process and program coordinator model with the primary duty of serving as the RN for MRI and as the MRI utilization review nurse; additionally, responds to Imaging Service's Radiologic needs to maximize access to care and program efficiency.

Additional foci include quality improvement. Has broad program responsibilities, which include nursing coordination of MRI procedures (and Radiologic procedures as needed) and monitoring of outcomes using a data-driven quality assurance process of a program that delivers comprehensive, complex, and specialized professional services that are important program components of the Medical Center and significantly affect the health care provided to Veterans. The MRI Radiology Nurse acts with active collaboration in clinical areas within the Gulf Coast Veterans Health care System.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

  • Physical Standards in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

  • English Language Proficiency. RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Qualifications

Preferred Experience: In addition to the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities determined to be essential for satisfactory performance in the position: * Minimum of two (3) years of recent, full time clinical experience as a RN in Radiology is preferred. * A high degree of personal and professional accountability, maturity, stability and the ability to function independently and work effectively as a team with other personnel at all levels in the organization. * Ability to adapt to changing work assignments as needed to meet clinic needs and patient care demands. * Ability to oversee, direct, and teach support staff. * Ability to manage and coordinate patient care using the nursing process. * Experience in designing, implementing, and tracking the provision of healthcare with appropriate follow-up. * Ability to foster an interdisciplinary approach to patient care. * Effective oral/written communications and proficiency in the use of computer applications to include Microsoft Word and Excel. * Exceptional internal and external customer service skills, current and unrestricted RN license, BLS certification required and current National Certification in Radiology preferred.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: * Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. * Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. * Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. * Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. * Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Standards in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 lbs; Light lifting under 15lbs; Moderate carrying, 15-44 lbs; Light carrying, under 15lbs; Straight pulling; Pushing; Walking; Standing; Stooping; Sitting; Repeated bending; Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable 13' to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4;Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; both eyes required; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing(aid permitted); and emotional/mental stability.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
