- A medical technologist must be able to perform laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Assists in the collection, processing and analysis of tests ordered. Assists other staff members with the completion of routine workload. Ensures that all procedures are performed, controlled, recorded and reported. Act as a supervisor when appointed as charge technologist and may need to take control of situations as they arise. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital's strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Performs and teaches bench level tasks in all areas as assigned. Assists with the completion of workload and ensures that all procedures are performed, controlled, recorded and reported. Performs routine maintenance, troubleshoots and repairs instruments to ensure smooth operations. Correlates unexpected test results with disease states or applies scientific principle theory of testing procedures to determine the rationale behind unexpected results. Recognizes, identifies and resolves problems and issues that arise. Actively participates in Laboratory Quality Assurance activities with emphasis on assuring compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Maintains and supports computer information systems by entering data, analyzing, verifying, and printing reports. Maintains quality control programs and takes appropriate action to resolve and appropriately document unacceptable values. Communicates instrument or testing concerns, problems to the supervisor or charge technologist promptly. Maintains inventory control to assure adequate supplies and reagents needed for operations. Ensures supplies are stored in proper locations promptly. Actively participates in laboratory and/or hospital committees and activities such as continuing education and customer service teams. Follows departmental operating procedures for quality assurance, quality control, and notification of critical values and completes appropriate documentation. Demonstrates ability to multitask and prioritize work to meet needs within established timeframe while experiencing frequent interruptions. Promotes customer service/satisfaction. Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings. Completes mandatory hospital education and laboratory competency annually and on time. Addresses conflict in a manner that supports team development. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to meet department needs. Able to work continuously with confidential information. Ability to work unsupervised and to act as a supervisor in multiple sections of the laboratory. Able to function in emergency and stressful situations. Work with biological hazardous materials and other hazardous chemicals. May be required to remain in the hospital during emergencies, such as hurricanes. Color perception must be acceptable. Vision and hearing must be normal or correctable. Assist with control of cost through judicious use of human and material resources. Presents a professional image. Will answer the phone promptly and supporting very good customer service. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: BS Degree in Clinical Laboratory/Medical Technology Science with one year of general laboratory experience. Required: Typing and computer skills. Good organizational skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize. Medical Terminology. Good customer relation skills. Good communication/phone skills. Professional knowledge of concepts, principles, practices, methodology including routine, complex and infrequently requested analysis. Knowledge of quality control principles and ability to correlate laboratory results. Knowledge and understanding of instrument technology sufficient to monitor mechanical and technical operations and to locate and correct malfunctions. Must be able to make sound decisions and able to communicates information quickly and clearly. Must be able to read , understand and follow MSDS sheets. A BS degree in chemical, physical, biological or Clinical Laboratory/Medical Technology science from an accredited university. Must meet all requirements of CLIA Subpart M--Personnel for Nonwaived Testing for performing testing in High Complexity Laboratory. Licensure/Certification: Preferred: Current CPR certification. Required: Nationally registered by ASCP or equivalent/eligible. Must have a current Louisiana license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLP.GEN-CLS) or application in progress (tempory permit).
